I have been doing some research on expectations for peak times this upcoming fall season and wanted to provide you with some updates on when to expect peak color from the leaves in the mountains and right here at home in Rowan County this upcoming fall season
.
Of course the earliest and most vibrant fall foliage occurs in the beautiful mountains, located in the western part of the state, although leaf peepers may also enjoy very nice fall color a little later in the season in many areas around Rowan County. I have learned that because of the high elevation of many of the North Carolina mountains, some of the tallest in the eastern United States, the peak fall foliage period in the higher areas usually precedes peak foliage periods in many more northerly regions.
Based on past averages, the typical best times to see fall foliage in the state are:
- Western NC Highest Elevations: late September to early October
- Western North Carolina - Early to Mid October
- Western to Central North Carolina - Mid October to Late October
- Central North Carolina - Late October to Early November
One note to mention. These are based on average peak times of previous years and times could vary slightly based on conditions that may have an impact on the leaves as we move through the fall season.
I hope you can use this information to help you plan a trip this upcoming season to view the colors in your favorite spot!
I will provide updates as conditions change leading into the leaf viewing season right here on rowancountyweather.com
Have a great day everyone! As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
