Strong to Severe storms possible tonight

Thursday, June 2, 2016 - 11:34am

The last few days we have been dealing with the heat and some scattered chances for isolated showers and storms. As you have noticed over the past few days the storms and showers that have developed have been slow movers. Looking at model data I am seeing a convincing trend that leads me to believe one of those slow movers may very well develop over the county tonight and bring some heavy rain with frequent lightning and possible hail.

Let's take a look at how I think today will play out.

The high will top out in the upper 80's today and with the dewpoint being in the upper 60's the conditions will be uncomfortable outside.

The storms I am concerned about will have the chance for development this evening.

The storms are expected to develop and move in around 7pm and could last through the late evening with heavy downpours, lightning and hail being the main threats.

There is a marginal risk for severe weather development from the Storm Prediction center already for today. I would not be surprised to see a watch of some sort issued later today as well.

Rainfall totals could be high but are elevated a bit on the models because of the hail potential.

I will provide updates throughout the day and into the evening. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
