A look back at April and the year so far.

Sunday, May 1, 2016 - 9:27am

Now that we are in the month of May. Let's take a look back at April and how we stand for 2016 as well.

The Highest temperature we recorded in April was 85º and the lowest was 28º On average how does April stack up temperature wise compared to April's in the past?

A three way tie for the 49th warmest April on record. So that's all good and well but economically how did it stack up for cooling our homes? This April ranked 46th all time for cooling degree days. These are days where the average temperature stayed above 65º Hopefully you will see that reflected in your power bills when you get them.

Now on to the more impactful information how are we doing with total precipitation for April in terms of rainfall? Rowan County officially ended up with 1.12 inches of rain the entire month of April making it the 7th driest April of all time.

Now how are we stacking up for the year to this point?

Currently we are in the 60th warmest year on record through the end of April. Of course we are closing in on the months that will bring us up to a higher ranking on that list.

As you can see from above the most disturbing statistic so far this year is that we are currently dealing with 2nd driest year on record but again this is only through the end of April.

For just this year looking at where our normal totals are to this point you can see that the following is true.

  1. Our high temperatures are pretty much in the normal range so far.
  2. Our low temperatures are running about 3º above normal for the year.
  3. We need rain!!!! Currently we are 7.74 inches below normal for the year.

The good news is with the rainfall we have had since midnight the month of May is off to a great start!

I will of course post a mid month update in May to see how things are trending but again the most important statistic is we need rain!

As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
