Not to be confused with the calendar observations of the season from Dec 21st - March 21st. In Meteorological Winter the three coldest months of the year for average temperatures are observed (Dec-Feb) Let's take a look back at how this meteorological winter stacked up compared to previous meteorological winters.
For starters the average temperature. This Meteorological Winter we saw an average temperature of 43.7 degrees which ties us for 35th all time. We hit a high temperature of 74 degrees a total of three times this season which would rank 55th all time with the highest temperature ever recorded standing at 82 degrees recorded during the winter of 1947-1948
As far as precipitation goes we saw a rainfall total of 9.09 inches for the three month period which ranks as the 38th driest all time.
Snowfall totals we hit a total of 2.1 inches officially at the Rowan County Airport.
The number of days we needed to heat our homes ranked in at 47th all time for the number of days this season with the average temperature being below 65 degrees for an extended period of time.
After we officially end the winter season based on the calendar I will post a blog to revisit my Long Range Winter Forecast that I put out on Halloween Day last year. Until then just enjoy the time we have left for the calendar winter season and know that the countdown to Spring is on!
As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
