I was contacted by an event organizer on September 12th and asked about being a Guest Celebrity Judge for this event. I accepted and even went as far as to help promote the event on my social media pages and right here on rowancountyweather.com. I was advised to be at the event Friday, September 20th between 5:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. I was also invited to stay and have a meal with the other judges starting at 7:00 p.m.
Earlier today I posted on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram about how I was honored to be a judge at this event. I was honestly very excited and looking forward to the event. As you may or may not know, I work in Charlotte during the day on Monday through Friday. I made arrangements to ensure I left Charlotte early this afternoon to arrive at the event on time. If you have ever traveled I-85 in either direction between Salisbury and Charlotte, you know its likely you will encounter traffic regardless of what you do.
Unfortunately for me, that is what happened today. I left Charlotte just after 4 p.m. and did not make it to the event until 5:55 p.m. I immediately went into the event and made my way back to the back of the building where the judges would be tasting the various types of BBQ.
I was introduced to the head judge who immediately responded "We are done." He also informed me that everyone was seated and the entrants were getting ready to come in with their food. He rudely told me, "I don't need you now!" I advised him about the traffic and how it was unavoidable for me. The response from the head judge was "Well you can go stand over there if you want (as he pointed to a corner of the room) and "You can eat with us at the judges meal at 7:oo." I responded "No thank you."
I started to leave the building and was approached by another individual who was kind enough to escort me back to the judges area when I arrived. He asked me to stay and enjoy some dinner with judges at 7 p.m.. I told him I appreciated his offer but I was leaving. I also stated, "I don't feel like I should have been treated the way I was after I promoted this event. I advised him that I would make this post about my experience.
I was approached again in the parking lot by the organizer who initially invited me to the event and he stated, "The KCBS has strict rules on the time judges should arrive and if they don't arrive on time they are disqualified." I told him that I certainly understood that. However, I was caught in traffic and made every attempt to get here on time. I also reminded him that I promoted the event on social media and my website. I was also doing all of this for free. I even pointed out that the event hadn't even started yet. In fact at this point the entrants hadn't even placed the food in front of the judges. The organizer replied, "I know, and if it was up to me I would say go ahead and sit down." I appreciated his response.
I then made my way to my vehicle and left the event. This was certainly a very unfortunate experience. This encounter has made me realize that ongoing I need to be more selective in the events I agree to promote and be a part of. I am not a fan of making posts like this, but I positively promote events here on Rowan County Weather's various outlets all the time. I felt I needed to do a follow up on this experience to ensure that none of you, my valued followers, arrive to have a similar experience. Thank you for allowing me to provide this feedback concerning this event experience. Thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
