Rowan County Weather and MeteoTechWx

Thursday, February 7, 2019 - 2:17pm

For the past 6 years Rowan County Weather has been providing weather coverage and forecast for Rowan County residents. I have been humbled by how welcoming you all have been to me. I want to ask you to show that same respect for a group of local storm chasers who live right here in Rowan County!

Here is a little bit about MeteoTechWx

We are MeteoTechWx, or as we’re better known to most, Jim and Kayla Kalenian. We’re a father/daughter team of meteorologists based in central North Carolina who love all things weather, storm chasing, and coffee. While our main interest is in severe weather with things like tornadoes, hurricanes, and lightning, we also enjoy snow and flooding events. Anything that gets us out into the world doing what we love.
If we’re not out chasing or checking our radars together, you’ll find us working our day jobs (Jim as a computer engineer and Kayla as a math tutor) or spending time with the rest of our family. Now that we’ve introduced ourselves together as MeteoTechWx, let’s introduce ourselves individually.
Kayla here! I am 21-years-old and a 2017 graduate from the University of North Carolina at Asheville. While my major was in Meteorology, I also minored in Math and use that everyday as a middle/high school math tutor and a homeschool high school math teacher. My non-meteorology hobbies include reading, photography, and traveling the world. Whaaat? Traveling the world, Kayla? Yes! I’ve been to five different countries since April of this year and will be going to my sixth in October. There’s a little bit about me so let’s hear from my Dad next
Hello, I’m Jim (Kayla’s Dad). I graduated from the University at Albany in Albany, New York in 1992 majoring in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology. I have been interested in storm chasing since I was a teenager. My love of storms grew by watching classic shows like Nova and In Search Of back in the day. Then, storm chasing was just starting to be a thing among the scientific community. If I’m not storm chasing or working my 9-to-5, I am playing basketball, working out, playing my guitar, or drinking coffee. Although I am not the world traveler like my daughter, I have been to a good part of the U.S., and I hope to explore more of our great country in the future (and get good weather photos as well)!
By sharing our journey on social media through photos, videos, and written words, our goal is to get people excited about weather and looking to the skies. Don’t worry if you’re not a meteorologist! There’s a place in this Chase Fam for everyone; whether you want to know everything there is to know about forecasting and how storms form, or you just want to see interesting weather pictures and pick up a few fun facts to impress your friends. So grab your radars and join us on our MeteoTechWx journey!

So now that you know a little bit about MeteoTechWx I am honored to announce a partnership between Rowan County Weather and MeteoTechWx! This will allow for Rowan County to provide you with forecast before storms arrive. Rowan County Weather will of course continue to provide you with coverage during and after the storms. MeteoTechWx will be there to provide on the ground information and some awesome photo's and video during and after storms pass through.
