Weekend Winter Weather Update Posted 10pm 12/6/18

Thursday, December 6, 2018 - 10:18pm

The short range models are starting to paint a clearer picture of what to expect from the winter weather system that will move through the region and county starting Saturday afternoon and lasting into Tuesday morning.

We will see rain start to move into the county around midday Saturday. The rain may be very light at first as their will be dry air causing evaporation as the rain falls to the ground, If you have plans Saturday you should be fine other than dealing with a cold miserable rain.

Around 2am Sunday morning we will begin to get a mix of sleet, freezing rain, rain and snow as cold air starts to move into the the atmosphere above the county.

Around 3am Sunday morning we will start to see sleet as the cold air aloft starts to becoming more dense in the atmosphere. Conditions on the roadways will start to deteriorate quickly.

Early Sunday morning around 4am snow will start to take over as the cold air in the atmosphere will become solid from the cloud to the ground. If you venture out early Sunday morning please know there could be a thing glaze of ice under snow laying on the roadways.

As we head toward dawn Sunday morning. a mix of sleet, freezing rain and rain will be falling around the county. This will increase the potential for ice accumulation around the county.

by 7am Sunday morning we could see another period of sleet falling around the county. By this point we are looking at a couple of hours of icy accumulation around the county as we begin to move into the daytime hours on Sunday.

Sunday morning we could see accumulations of around 1-3 inches of snowfall around the county with a trace to a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation with the system. Overall I am forecasting 4-9 inches of snowfall for the system by Tuesday morning. Ice accumulation of around a tenth to a quarter of an inch around the county by Tuesday morning.

I will continue to post updates here and on social media as we move through the weekend. I will post another blog update in the morning giving you more details on what to expect as we move through the day on Sunday. As always thank you for following Rowan County Weather!
